‘7 Keys to Unlock your Business Potential’

I’ve been listening to the challenges you’ve been experiencing in business and have come up with a solution that is a result of hundreds of hours of business mentoring and the experiences and challenges that many of my clients have faced.

So today I would like to introduce my 7 part series on ‘The 7 Keys to Unlock your Business Potential’.

The first key we will be covering today is -

‘Creating a Business Mindset’

We all enter into business with good intentions, great ideas and a lot of passion. We want to succeed, have a lifestyle that provides us with freedom and the money to do whatever it is we want.

This is all well and good; however, if you don’t have a business mindset that steers you towards business success, then ultimately it will end in failure. You see, many people run their business with an employee mindset which results in a lack of direction, poor revenue and hours spent wasted working ‘in’ their business instead of ‘on’ it.

They become frustrated with the lack of growth and easily disillusioned with business in general. The good news is, that if you simply shift your mindset and begin to think as a business person instead of an employee, things will change rapidly.

A client of mine named Mary came to me a month ago and was feeling challenged with having no direction in her business. She was extremely indecisive and had no idea where she was headed. Mary’s challenge was that she has a lot of great ideas but no strategies on how to implement them.

One week she did a letter box drop and wondered why she only received two calls. The next week she cancelled that and put an advertisement in the local paper. When that didn’t get the results she was after, she tried something else and on and on it went.

When we began working together, Mary realised that what she needed was to develop a business mindset and begin to analyse her marketing tactics, test and measure the results and then make changes accordingly. Essentially, Mary needed to develop a business mindset and start to make decisions that would generate revenue and results. You see, she was running her business like a hobby instead of a business.

Together we came up with a solution that enabled her to gain a greater understanding of what it really takes to be a successful business woman. Now Mary has a marketing strategy, ideas that work and a system to assist her to implement them. In actual fact, by changing her mindset, she has changed her business.

To help you gain some clarity around what it means to have a strong business mindset, take a look at these 7 steps and notice what needs attention.

1.   Having a business mindset is knowing that the purpose of business is to make money.
Obvious I know but you would be surprised how many people run their business like a hobby and make less money working full time on their business than they did when they were employed.

2.   Having a business mindset means thinking for yourself vs. letting other people think for   you.
Be careful whose opinion you ask for. People often have good intentions, but don’t have a clue about what makes a successful business. Seek the opinions only of those who you respect, whose opinion you have asked for and who are more successful than you currently are.

3.   Having a business mindset means being more intentional about your business activity.
Simply put – If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

4.   Having a business mindset is about understanding your target market and knowing how to connect with them.
Who is your ideal client? Do you even know? If not, then it’s time to find out. If you don’t know who you are marketing to, how can you know how to market to them?

5.   Having a business mindset is being open to opportunities and to notice them when they come your way.
Always be open to the possibility of creating a win win with people you come across. Start asking the better questions and you’ll start getting better answers. The question I like to ask is ‘what if?’ It gives me the opportunity to explore a common ground and to see if we can create a strategic alliance or joint venture relationship.

6.   Having a business mindset is understanding how your business emotionally affects you.
Okay girls, you know what I’m talking about. You need to take notice of those times when you fly off the handle; when your buttons have been pushed; when something gets under your skin and you have an emotional response to it. The easy way around this is to ask yourself what’s really happening. Be consciously aware of what’s going on and you can resolve it more easily. Once you get into the habit of this, it’s  less likely to occur again.

7.     Having a business mindset is about doing the things that other people aren’t willing to do – like hard work and letting go.
Well, that’s rather obvious; it’s  kind of like a child. In the beginning you spend hours, upon hours tending to her needs, she is constantly in your company and requires your continuous support, love and attention. Then the day comes when she doesn’t need you as much and you have to let her go….

I trust these 7 steps have got you thinking about your own business mindset and the areas where you could improve.
